The main differences

Both are oral antihistamines and list the same core uses on the label: itching of the nose or throat, itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing.

On drowsiness: Claritin: The carton says "Non-Drowsy" when taken as directed. Taking more than directed may cause drowsiness. Benadryl: The label warns "marked drowsiness may occur", and that excitability may occur, especially in children.

Dosing: Claritin is once a day; Benadryl is every 4 to 6 hours.

Which might suit you

Consider Claritin if
  • you need to stay alert during the day
  • you want a single daily pill
Consider Benadryl if
  • you want a dose you can repeat every 4 to 6 hours and drowsiness is not a problem

This is based only on what the two labels say. Neither label claims to work better than the other. A pharmacist can help if you have other conditions or take other medicines.
